Working from home is not always as glamorous as we think. It has its advantages but it also has its limitations. One way to help make those limitations easier to deal with is to create an office space that is efficient, easy to use, and classy all at the same time.
Choose a Dedicated Space
Often we think bigger is better, but size doesn’t matter in this case. You can create a home office out of any space – a corner of a room or a small closet perhaps. What’s important here is that you find a place that is quiet and private.
Use Sufficient Lighting
If your home office space gives you natural light, this can be a refreshing way to work during the day. If not, try using a small desk lamp, floor lamp, or install some lighting on the wall above your desk.
Maximize Storage
Think vertical. Narrow bookshelves on either side of your desk offer much-needed storage space. Open shelves or wall organizers can hold office supplies or files that need to be easily accessible.
Select Only Necessary Equipment
Decide what it is you truly need to complete your work properly. Typically a desk, chair, computer, and high-speed Internet access are the basics you need to open for business. Do you need to print or scan documents? Do you need a desktop computer or can you get by with a laptop? The answers to these questions depend on the type of work you perform and the needs of your clients.
Have Fun With Decor
This can be the most fun part of creating an office space. Display photos of your family in cute frames. Print out special phrases or meaningful quotes and hang them on your wall or on top of your desk. When looking for office supplies, find some that match your personality.
Try your best not to get hung up on all the details. Find a space to work, bring in some lighting, provide yourself with options for storage, begin with only essential equipment, and have fun decorating your new space.
